The fabric of the cover is thick and very soft. We have the featherbed directly on the mattress, with a thick mattress pad on top and then the sheets on top of that. Before the featherbed the mattress pad used to slip all around and we'd have to re-do the mattress pad every day, but now it keeps it pretty much in place. The only problem is that every few days you need to pull the featherbed up a bit because it slips down about 6 inches after a few nights.
