Description
This is a late model, circa 1950's Plant 14 inch Independent Straight-line Engine The Engine Turning Machine is for Decorative, Guilloche Engraving, sometimes called a straight-line engraving, and Ornamental Turning. The work can be done on flat and curved surface. This fine English made machine (probably built 1950s) has 14” of vertical travel and has a spindle thread of 1” diameter, 8 threads to the inch.  It has an automatic indexer for rotary work. It is supplied with cutter, geed (guides to control depth of cut), “rubbers” (cam followers), Chucks and Pattern Bars.  It is in excellent working condition, with all slides working freely, without play or roughness.                This machine can produce linear or rotary-straight line guilloche’, as well as making borders around rotary engine turning or used as a “ruling engine”.  With its long stroke, large areas of precious metals (silver or gold) can be engraved in a very modest amount of time, with patterns such as moiré’, drape and of course the much simpler methods.  With the pen/pencil chuck, cylinders can be similarly ornamented.               Faberge’ used Straight Line Engine Turning Machines extensively in his work, especially in cigarette cases, compacts and other flat or raised objects, as well as on cylinders. These objects of beauty are well illustrated in John Traina’s book, “The Faberge’ Case”.   This is a hand-operated floor model machine  Included are the following items   Plant 14 inch Independent Straight-line Engine on stand.
