This Lakota Star Quilt would make a Wonderful Gift for a Loved One. Or a Collection Item for Native American Collectors or to just simply to keep you warm during the winter months. A brief History on The Sicangu Lakota Star Quilts Brightly colored Quilts, with a symbolic star in the middle, were given as a way to Honor Friends and Relatives. The Star Quilts are ripe with symbolism from Tribal Traditions. An Eagle represents courage, wisdom & enduring strength. Turtles represent Fertility & Patience. The colors Red, Yellow, White & Black represent the 4 Directions & the 4 Races of People. The Stars that are found on many of the Quilts represent the Morning Star, Promise, Rebirth and Renewal, depending on your background. The process of making quilts, the time when quilters sit together & talk is an important part of Tradition. It is a time to get together & share stories, it's like with any quilting group, they pass down Traditions & Tribal Stories. It's a way the quilts blend cultures. After contacts with Whites, Lakota, Dakota & Nakota women, adopted quilting and made their own. They made quilts as an alternative to quilled & beaded buffalo robes. The Star had been a symbol in the Lakota, Dakota & Nakota Myths, Ceremonies, and Artwork for generations. Star Quilts, made by sewing cloth diamonds into an 8-pointed star, use the popular symbol. Star Quilts are often given away at Naming Ceremonies, Birthdays, Graduations, Weddings, Vetran Homecomings, Wakes & Memorials. It is a way in Honoring Friends & Family.
